The 2D class learned about Kathe Kollwitz's artwork and how she addressed issues that affecting her community. The students each chose a social issue that impacted them and created a visual to represent it. Then they carved their image onto a linoleum block and created a series of prints. They mounted their best print to display in the hallway.

Working in clay! The room is a mess and the students are two hands deep in clay with smiles on their faces! We used the slab method to construct our cups, imprinting them with a variety of textures. Students had to roll their clay out to the desired thickness, cut their side walls and bottom pieces. They applied our rule of 3 S's - score, slip and smooth as they joined the clay surfaces. We'll start firing them on Friday in hopes of glazing before Thanksgiving break! :) Students repurposed discarded book pages. Each student was given a page and then instructed to create a sentence from words that were already printed. Students then created an image that would reflect and enhance their chosen sentence. They blocked out the remaining words by filling in the silhouette of their image with black. 8th grade artists art learning about the Pop Art movement, where familiar objects from pop culture were inspiration for works of art. The bright bold colors of Pop Art lend themselves very well to the colorful candy wrappers that were flooding stores around Halloween, and we couldn't resist. Students worked with scale to enlarge a small portion of their candy wrapper, and focused on painting crisp lines. These works of art really help to brighten the halls at Hillyard. |
