We are starting with the basic elements of art for second semester students. This week we practiced line through the exercise of blind contour drawings- drawing the object you see without looking at your paper, as well as peeking contour drawings. We chose pinecones and magnolia pods as our subjects because we wanted students to practice drawing what they see instead of drawing what they know, or think they see. These natural items have many variations within their overall patterns. We also talked about composition, placement of our image on the paper.
For this last lesson of the semester, students used x-acto blades to make intricate cuts. They designed two different patterns to cut, and alternated them about a grid. Lastly, they used color paper to create emphasis in the negative space.
